I've read a lot but in the meantime I'm a bit confused.

At the moment we only have a main branch. Main problem with that: As we deliver continous we deliver untested features.
I thought a possible solution might be to use the strategy "Development isolation" like described in "Branching Strategies" from VSALM Rangers (page 14). We develope within the dev branch and when a feature is completely tested it will be reverse integrated to main branch as part of the next release.

Following two questions occured to me:

Is it possible to change main and dev - meaning: Develope in main branch, forward integrate to dev and use dev as release?

As we're a team that consists of eight developers there's a lot of integration work to do, each workitem might consist of several check-ins. What is a handy tool to cope with this work?

In theory you could branch from anywhere to everywhere, but it would no longer be development isolation you'd be doing, but you'd be doing promotion level branching. Dev (or Main) to Testing.

And that would be a step back from what you're doing now from a perspective of agility.

Instead of shipping untested features, could you help each other to complete one feature first before starting on the next? Could you use practices like Feature Toggles or Branching by abstraction (use sort of a plugin model) to turn off features that aren't finished yet, instead of not integrating them into the main branch?

I know it feels like a great idea to separate out either the stabilization (in case of promotion branching) or the individual developers or features (in case of Development Isolation), but merging always comes back to bite you. And remember that after completing your testing in development isolation, you'd still need to retest after merging to main. The same applies to promotion level branching, any fix you do to a higher promotion level constantly needs to be merged back to Main and possibly new development on Main may be requested to be (partially, shudder) be merged with the latest almost ready release.

You're much better off where you are and perfecting that!
